Family first birthday photography is definitely one of our favorites! We love celebrating such a big milestone with not only The Guest of Honor, but also with family! Dominick’s family is one of our nearest and dearest – we have been photographing big sisters, Hailey and Hannah, for years, so we knew that this session would definitely be an adventure!

The session began with the cake smash,  indoors, at our Midland Park studio. The set was a gigantasourous fun time.. outfitted with dinosaurs and shades of orange, green and blues. So fun and we couldn’t wait for Dominick to dive into his cake.

Hmmm. it seemed Dom had other thoughts and completely snubbed the cake, the camera and our (ehemm) off-key signing. The smash definitely didn’t start out as planned – this is not unusual, though.  Often, these little ones are unaccostemd to the cake, as well as the fan-fare that goes along with the session, which in turn can be intimidating. After a little bit of time, Dominick began his warm-up and apprehensively began investigating and nibbling on his cake. There was some smashing, some crying and yes, finally some smiles..

The session moved outdoors for family pictures, which included mom, dad and big sisters. Our location was the Thielke Arboretum of Glen Rock. The location provided a thick covering of trees, wooded pathways and both a pond and brook. Perfect backdrops for beautiful, fall sunset photos.

There was such pretty light and the temps were still so comfortable, which allowed for plentiful shots. The girls were excited and loved being silly. Dom was so happy in daddy’s arms and loved being outside. As always, we loved capturing this fun family for this special time and milestone.

Here’s a sneak peek at some of favorite.
